According to the Baaghi TV report, the human relationship with the book is getting weaker and weaker. That being said, this is the last century of the book.
No matter how digital the world becomes, turning the pages from a book for reading and the effect that its fragrance leaves on the reader cannot be second to none. Good habits like reading books and reading are being abandoned in the society. In today’s digital age everything is available on the internet but the importance of books is still there.
In these circumstances, any attempt to restore the relationship with the book is commendable.
A similar effort was made in the form of the establishment of the Street Library in Karachi. It was inaugurated on December 25, 2019, taking this process further. A second such library was inaugurated in the Lyari area. In these circumstances, time is urgently needed to establish public libraries at various intersections
Strong connectivity with smartphones and the Internet has weakened young people’s interest in reading books and it is no longer easy to attract them to books. However, an attempt has been made to arouse interest in reading by setting up the first and unique street library of its kind in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city in terms of population.
Some time ago, there was a lot of illegal encroachment on the sidewalks at the famous Metropole Chowrangi in Karachi. But now one can see here a wall adorned with artwork of the country’s historic buildings, apart from the founders of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Fatima Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Liaquat Ali Khan. In the middle of this wall are wooden cabinets in which books on various subjects are kept. This is the first and unique street library of its kind in Pakistan, inaugurated on December 25.
This street library is a joint effort of Sindh Government and Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalawani. Regarding the Street Library, Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalawani said that it is a small symbolic library. The purpose of setting up this library is to attract people to study and also to give them such a public place.
About 600 books will be kept here at a time. The most interesting thing is that this library will work on the basis of Take Book Leave Book. In other words, if you are taking a book from this library, you will have to keep one of your books on this shelf in return. There will be no librarian here, meaning the public will have to come here and honestly look at the system of picking and keeping their favorite books.
