Paris: The European Union (EU) has reportedly agreed to freeze the assets of the Russian president and foreign minister. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, warplanes and tank shelling continued in various cities, including the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

According to the news agency, the United States, Britain, and Europe have imposed financial sanctions on Russia, after which the EU has also decided to impose sanctions on the Russian President and Foreign Minister (FM), Vladimir Putin and Sergei Lavrov, while also freezing their assets, respectively.

In this regard, the Latvian Foreign Minister said that the EU is preparing another plan for sanctions on Russia which will be announced soon. Now that Russia has invaded Ukraine, there is a wave of insecurity in the countries surrounding Ukraine. One of them is Finland, a country in Northern Europe, which is also a part of the European Union and shares borders with Russia, Norway, and Sweden.

After the invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s Prime Minister (PM), Sanna Marin, said in a statement that she, too, was ready to join the Western defense alliance, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), when it came to her country’s security. Speaking in Parliament, Sanna Marin said that Finland was ready to apply for NATO membership in the event of a threat to their national security.

According to reports, Russia has reacted sharply to the Finnish PM’s statement, saying it shares a border with Finland and opposes NATO’s expansion, calling it against its ‘national security’. In addition, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Finland’s accession to NATO would have “serious military and political consequences”.

The statement added: “We respect the Finnish government’s policy of military neutrality and consider it a key factor in maintaining stability and security in Northern Europe. However, Finland’s accession to NATO would have serious military and political consequences.”
