On Friday, the federal government officially informed the Supreme Court about the establishment of a “special fact-finding committee” aimed at ensuring compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning the 2017 sit-in organized by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) at Islamabad’s Faizabad.
The Attorney-General for Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, conveyed this update to the court in a concise three-page report that was submitted for review.
In a hearing on September 28, a three-member bench, consisting of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Aminuddin Khan, and Justice Athar Minallah, had considered a set of review petitions challenging the Supreme Court’s initial verdict. However, during the proceedings, various parties, including the defense ministry through the federal government, the PTI, and Ijazul Haq, the son of the former military dictator Ziaul Haq, chose to withdraw their pleas, leading the Chief Justice to question, “why is everyone so afraid to speak the truth” as the Intelligence Bureau and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) were also involved in this move.
