Oct 15, 2021: The FBR clarified on Friday that the deadline for filing income tax returns would not be extended beyond today (Friday).
The spokesperson said that the results of a full-fledged campaign are showing and people are increasingly submitting their annual income tax returns. The tax collection agency revealed that the number of people filing tax returns has exceeded 2.3 million.
A spokesman said a total of 2,350,000 people had filed their tax returns. He further said that so far more than Rs 45 billion worth of tax has been collected along with the statements for the current financial year. An official FBR spokesman reiterated that the date for filing annual income tax returns would not be extended.
It is noteworthy that the Board of Revenue had earlier stated that it would not extend the deadline after September 30. However, the extraordinary interest in existing and new taxpayers has led to the FBR’s IRIS online portal and there has been excessive pressure on the functional performance resulting in occasional interruptions.
Given the unprecedented increase in website users and the difficulties faced by the FBR due to technical hurdles, it issued a 15-day extension notification on September 30 and a deadline to file returns by October 15, 2021.
However, the FBR explained: “It is further confirmed that the September 30 extension was made only because the FBR’s IT system was overloaded and since it has now been fixed, No further expansion will be allowed after October 15, 2021. “
