Today, September 30, is the last day for filing income tax returns, and the Federal Bureau of Revenue’s (FBR) website has gone down in several cities as tax filers overload the website.
According to the FBR spokesperson, efforts are being made to get the site up and running again.
It is to be noted that the FBR adamantly refused to extend the date for its tax submission, saying that it hadn’t even entertained the notion. They had stated earlier this month that all taxpayers must file their taxes as soon as possible, just in case such a thing happened.
The Pakistan Tax Bar Association had tried to get the dates extended but the only minor concession that was given was extending the work hours of relevant offices for September 29 and 30, elongating them till 12 midnight.
Furthermore, according to reports, the FBR spokesperson has stated that traders who failed to get a Point of Sales (PoS) system installed would be heftily fined. If they don’t get it installed within 15 days, they would have to pay Rs 500,000 and if it goes up to 1 month, the fine would increase to Rs 3,000000.
It is to be noted that in the past, too, FBR systems have been subject to failures and crashes, and have more than once been hacked. Efforts, however, are being made to upgrade the system.
