Authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir have suspended a female Medical Officer for failing to attend Indian Independence Day celebrations, a move that reflects the coercive measures often imposed on Kashmiris.

The Medical Officer, identified as Dr Sabia Salam, was posted at District Hospital Bandipora. Officials said she skipped the August 15 function organized by the district administration, describing the act as “serious misconduct and indiscipline.” The suspension order, issued by the Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital Bandipora, said that Dr. Salam has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. Authorities added strict action would follow after an inquiry.

The people of IIOJK largely reject India’s Independence Day, viewing such celebrations as symbolic of India’s illegal occupation. Critics argue that suspending officials for refusing to attend these functions highlights the arbitrary and heavy-handed enforcement of loyalty, forcing individuals to take part in events they fundamentally oppose. Observers warn that such punitive measures undermine basic freedoms and are part of a broader pattern of intimidation against Kashmiris.
