New York: 19 people including 9 children killed in apartment building fire

Dec 17, 2021: Dozens of people are feared dead in a fire at a commercial building in western Japan, according to the NHK.

The fire broke out on Friday on the fourth or fifth floor of an eight-story building in a shopping and entertainment area in Osaka, NHK said. Some 28 people were “severely injured”, reported NHK. “Most of them are without vital signs.”

Some 27 of whom were found in a state of heart and lung failure, it added.

Videos from the scene, meanwhile, show smoke billowing from the fourth-floor windows of the building, where a psychiatric clinic is located, and on the roof of the building. The fire was found shortly after the clinic opened for business at 10:00 a.m. local time and was mostly extinguished within 30 minutes, the NHK reported.

The NHK said the second floor of the building, near Osaka’s main station in the center of the city, had a beauty salon, a clothing store and an English-language school. A man told the broadcaster that he saw a woman calling for help from one of the windows.

The cause of the fire and other details were not immediately known.
