Florida shooting leaves two dead, 20 wound

Hialeah, United States, May 31, 2021: Two individuals were killed and at least 20 injured early Sunday when three shooters shot indiscriminately into a crowd outside a concert in the Miami, police said, the most recent shooting incident in a year marked by gun violence and weapons sales.

The shots erupted near a banquet and events hall in a strip mall in Miami Gardens, a heavily Cuban community of working-class families.

Angelica Green told journalists at the scene that her child and nephew, both 24, were among those injured in the shooting in the early hours of Sunday. Both were in hospital recuperating, however the nephew, hit multiple times, was in a serious condition.

She had spoken to her child, who was “hysterical” when he called just after the shooting. “They say that a few people came out with hoodies and ski masks and just began shooting at the group,” she said, adding that it was “alarming.” The threesome escaped. Their motives remain unknown.

On Sunday, around twelve little yellow cones could be seen in the city outside the hall, marking where projectile casings and evidence were found. In addition to two people killed at the scene the two individuals at least 20 individuals were hospitalized, one in critical condition, police said.

In a tweet, the police division’s chief, Alfredo Ramirez III, denounced the “cowardly act of gun violence.” “These are cold blooded murderers that shot indiscriminately into a group, and we will look for justice,” he said. Police were looking for help from the local area in finding the shooters.

Chad Harris’ 19-year-old daughter was among those injured.”My little girl wound up getting shot in this,” Harris said, as indicated by CBS News. “Words can’t communicate how I feel at this moment. It’s a sad moment”

Florida stands out with the 2016 shooting at the Pulse dance club in Orlando, in which a shooter murdered 49 individuals, a significant number of them young Cuban-Americans. Over the previous year, firearm related deaths have surged across country.

On Wednesday, a public transit worker shot dead nine individuals at a California rail yard prior to directing his weapon on himself. A search this week of the shooter’s home – which was set on fire shortly before the assault – turned up 12 weapons, somewhere in the range of 22,000 rounds of ammo and suspected Molotov mixed drinks.

That followed earlier mass shootings in Indiana, California, Colorado and Georgia. While the coronavirus pandemic slowed workplace violence as more people stayed home, it also saw record gun sales.

In March last year, the number of weekly federal background checks on gun buyers surpassed one million for the first time, The New York Times reported. Then, this spring, the number hit 1.2 million one week, with many sales going to first-time owners.

The United States has a long, painful history of gun violence, a problem President Joe Biden has branded an “epidemic.” There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the country last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo issued an impassioned plea Sunday for action. “If we don’t fully mobilize as a society against it,” he said on Twitter, “it will get worse before it gets better.”
