WASHINGTON: Former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, winner of the Nobel Peace prize for humanitarian work has passed away in his Georgia home on Sunday, aged 100.

According to a statement issued by the White House, a day of mourning will be observed for Carter on January 9, as directed by President Joe Biden. “I call on the American people to assemble on that day… to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter”, Biden said.

Carter, a Democrat, became president of the US in January 1977 after defeating Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 elections. During his one-term presidency, on the one hand, Carter struggled with a bad economy and an Iran hostage crisis but on the other, he brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt. The Democrat was succeeded by Ronald Reagan, former actor and governor of California.

Carter listed among US presidents who lived the longest after their time in the White House. He earned a reputation as a ‘committed humanitarian, and was seen as a better former president than a in-0ffice president. After news of Carter’s death was announced, world leaders and former presidents of the US praised him him as a humble, compassionate man who contributed greatly toward peace in the Middle East region. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi wrote: “His significant role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel will remain etched in the annals of history”.

Confirming the reports of his death, the Carter Center said that public observances will be held in Atlanta and Washington with the events followed by a private interment in the Plains. However, final arrangements for Carter’s state funeral are still pending.

In recent years, the former president experienced several health issues including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. Although, Carter left the office in the early 1980s, his continuous effort on humanitarian causes resulted in him being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 as a recognition of his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts….” while promoting for democracy as well as socio-economic development.

In a 1991 documentary focused on his presidency, Carter claimed he had failed to convince the American public that he was a “forceful and strong leader” so his biggest failure was in fact, his political failure.

Despite many difficulties while in office, Carter who served as the 39th US President, gained global acclaim for being a human rights advocate who fought against hunger and poverty. Prior to serving as President, he had worked as a Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher since he was a teen which contributed to his strong sense of morality. He historically, chose to walk rather than ride in a limousine, for his 1977 inauguration parade.

However, not all of Carter’s post-presidency work was appreciated. He was criticized by former presidents George W. Bush and his father George H. W. Bush, for ‘freelance diplomacy’ in Iraq. In 2004, Carter termed the Iraq war initiated by then-president George W. Bush, as one of the most “gross and damaging mistakes” made by the US. He also termed the George W. Bush administration as the “worst in history” with Vice President Dick Cheney as a “disaster for our country [US]”.

Aside from his political career, Carter wrote over two dozen books from memoirs as president to children’s books and poetry. He also wrote books focused on religious faith and diplomacy.
