France’s Failing Relations with Africa
France has been navigating growing tensions with Burkina Faso and Mali in the realm of counter-terrorism operations, which recently led to the withdrawal of French troops from both nations. Many had expressed concerns about France’s perceived exertion of pressure on its former colonies.
In January 2023, Burkina Faso decided to terminate the agreement that had allowed French troops to combat terrorist groups within its borders. The increasing influence of the Wagner Group, a Russian private military company (PMC) with ties to the Russian government, played a significant role in expediting the dissolution of the accord with France.

The Wagner Group’s actions in Mali mirrored its prior operations in Sudan and the Central African Republic, revealing a strategic approach tailored to African states. Russia, alongside the Wagner Group, gained favor as French troops struggled to eliminate extremism at the desired pace. The desire to seek new partners stemmed from France’s perceived arrogance towards its former colonies rather than fostering relationships based on mutual respect.
Interestingly, the practice of seeking military assistance and granting control over valuable resources, such as gold mines, is not unique, as it mirrors the actions of other international players including France.
Today, China has emerged as a dominant force in the economic and trade landscapes of African nations. However, questions linger regarding China’s involvement, with concerns raised about the potential creation of “debt-trapped economies.”

African states boast mixed economies and face significant challenges, yet there is optimism about their projected growth in 2023-4, which ranks among the world’s second-fastest rates. One promising indicator is the surge in job creation, indicative of increased production, the emergence of new industries, and greater consumer purchasing power. For instance, South Africa experienced a noteworthy employment increase of 784,000 jobs (5.0%) during the fiscal year ending in 2023.
In light of these developments, Africa is increasingly becoming a focal point on the global stage, brimming with potential and opportunities.
