Dec 2, 2021: The Corona virus situation in Germany is “extremely serious” since the outbreak began last year, the country’s DIVI Association for Emergency Medicine warned on Wednesday.

If the numbers continue to rise, Germany will see more than 6,000 coronavirus patients in intensive care units (ICUs) in the next two weeks before the Christmas holidays, DIVI said in a statement. Intensive care physicians urged authorities to introduce increasingly drastic measures to reduce physical and social contact and to consider temporary lockdowns to curb the dramatic increase in new infections.

Many hospitals in Germany’s most infected coronavirus hotspot have run out of beds in ICUs and have postponed all non-essential operations as the country battles a brutal fourth wave of pandemic.

There were 4,636 seriously ill coronavirus patients in ICUs across the country on Tuesday, with 2,383 of them on ventilators, according to the DIVI association.

The Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s state infectious disease agency, reported 67,186 new cases on Wednesday, up 302 from a week ago, and 446 deaths – the highest daily figure since Feb. 18, bringing the overall death toll to 101,790.

Germany’s federal and regional governments agreed on Tuesday to take action to counter the fourth wave of COVID-19, including stepping up the vaccination campaign and restricting contact, especially for unvaccinated people.

Despite new restrictions announced by local authorities last month, infections are high, especially in the eastern and southern parts of the country, including Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria.

The state health office in Baden-Wuerttemberg said four people in southern Germany had tested positive for the Omicron CoVID-19, even though they had been completely vaccinated against the corona virus. Three of the victims returned from business trips to South Africa on November 26 and 27, respectively, and a fourth is a family member of one of the returnees. All four showed moderate symptoms.
