Nov 28, 2021: Preliminary statements are set to begin on Monday in the much-anticipated sex crimes trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, accused of grooming underage girls for the late British financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The 59-year-old daughter of the late newspaper Baron Robert Maxwell faces a life sentence if convicted of sex trafficking in New York for her ex-boyfriend Epstein, who committed suicide two years ago in jail.
Following Epstein’s death – a multi-million dollar money manager who befriended countless celebrities, including Britain’s Prince Andrew – prosecutors vowed to pursue co-conspirators involved in his crimes, leading to Maxwell’s arrest in July 2020.
She has since been held in the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, where she has complained of unhealthy and inhumane conditions. Maxwell’s alleged crimes took place between 1994 and 2004, and involves four unidentified women, including two women who say they were only 14 and 15 years old when they were raped.
Prosecutors say Maxwell befriended the girls during a shopping and movie theater trip, and later persuaded them to give Epstein a nude massage at his various residences, during which he engaged in sex before paying them.
US government attorneys say she sometimes participated in the alleged abuse, at her London home and at Epstein´s properties in Manhattan, Palm Beach and New Mexico.
Epstein died aged 66 in a Manhattan jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges, in what New York´s official coroner ruled a suicide.
