Thursday, June 18th: Worldwide, the number of homeless people has reached 80 million.

The United Nations said in a statement on Thursday that more than 1% of the world’s population, or about 80 million people, have been forced to flee their homes due to violence and repression. According to the United Nations, the number of displaced people has risen to record levels over the past decade.

The latest report from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) states that at the end of 2019, 7.95 million people were either refugees or asylum seekers or internally displaced persons (IDPs). The chances of these people returning to their homes also decreased.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grande, told AFP that 1% of the world’s population could not return home due to wars, human rights abuses and other forms of violence. “Political solutions are not enough to prevent crises,” he said. “Crisis that causes people to be evicted from their homes and never return.” The number was 40 million which doubled in a decade and in our view this trend will not slow down.

The report of the High Commission on Refugees said that 4.57 crore people were forced to flee to other areas within their own countries, 26 million refugees are living outside the borders of their countries and 42 million people are seeking asylum.

“The world community is divided and it has no power to ensure peace. So the situation will get worse and I fear next year will be worse than this year,” Grandi said.
