Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister of India for the two consecutive terms (from 2004-2014) has turned 88 today. He is a renowned economist, credited for introducing sweeping reforms in the 1990s.

Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932 in Chakwal, now in  the Punjab province of Pakistan, before the partition.

He studied at the Panjab University, University of Cambridge and obtained his doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford. He later taught at the Panjab University as well as Delhi School of Economics, and the University of Delhi.

Singh is an Indian economist, academic, and politician who served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Manmohan Singh held several key posts in the Government of India, such as Chief Economic Advisor (1972–76), governor of the Reserve Bank (1982–85) and head of the Planning Commission (1985–87). He is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan.

“India feels the absence of a PM with the depth of Dr Manmohan Singh. His honesty, decency and dedication are a source of inspiration for us all,” Rahul Gandhi said. “Wishing him a very happy birthday and a lovely year ahead,” the former Congress chief tweeted with the hashtag ‘HappyBirthdayDrMMSingh’.
