July 1, 2021: Prince Harry has made his first outing since returning to the UK. The Duke of Sussex is back home to unveil a statue of his late mother Princess Diana.

After testing negative for COVID-19 while isolating at Windsor, Harry made his first trip a surprise visit to greet children at the WellChild Awards.

The prince has been a patron of the charity for sick children since 2007 and has regularly attended the award ceremony, which celebrates inspirational young people living with serious illnesses.

Harry said he ‘could not be prouder’ to be at the event and that as a father of two, he feels ‘all the more connected, inspired and in awe of the resilience of these families’.

The royal then caught up with singers Ed Sheeran and Anne Marie who were also at the ceremony. Harry could be heard talking about his daughter, Lilibet Diana, to the Thinking Out Loud singer, who also welcomed a baby girl last year. ‘Congratulations, a girl right? We just had a little girl ten months ago now. You’re still in the trenches now! How do you manage with two?’

The Duke of Sussex admitted: ‘Two is definitely a juggle.’ According to Hello magazine Harry said Lilibet was ‘very chilled’ and ‘happy to just sit there while Archie [her older brother] is running around like crazy’.

Harry is set to reunite with his elder brother Prince William at the statue unveiling on Thursday with a private meeting planned after the ceremony. Relations have remained tense between the two brothers after Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s decision to step down as senior members of the Royal Family. Animosities only grew once the couple, now based in Los Angeles, staged a tell-all interview with beloved TV talkshow host Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking to one of the guests at the WellChild awards on Wednesday, Harry said: ‘I’m just so glad we can do it on what would have been her birthday, we weren’t sure we would be able to.’

The statue, which was commissioned in 2017 on the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, is located in the sunken gardens in Kensington Palace, and will be unveiled on Thursday, July 1, which would have been the late Princess of Wales’s 60th birthday.
