Esteemed actor Michael Gambon, renowned for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight “Harry Potter” films, has passed away at the age of 82, as confirmed by his publicist on Thursday. According to a statement released by his family through the Associated Press, he succumbed to pneumonia.

In the words of his family, conveyed by his publicist, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Sir Michael Gambon. A cherished husband and father, Michael peacefully departed in the hospital, surrounded by his wife Anne and son Fergus.”

The Irish actor was cast as the much-loved Dumbledore after the death of his predecessor, Richard Harris, in 2002. Gambon started his role as the magical mentor in 2004 with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” through the final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”
