A Saudi newspaper and an Iranian official have said that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran will meet in Beijing on Thursday (April 6).
According to the British news agency Reuters, the two countries are working on the next steps after the restoration of their diplomatic relations mediated by China.
The meeting between Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian will be the first official meeting between the two countries at the highest level in more than seven years.
After years of tension, Tehran and Riyadh agreed last month to bridge their diplomatic gulf and reopen embassies, brokered by China.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters: “The foreign ministers of the two countries have agreed to meet in Beijing on April 6, which China is facilitating.”
The Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat quoted a source in Riyadh as saying that China was chosen for the meeting “thanks to Beijing’s positive role in reaching an agreement and facilitating communication between the two countries.”
