Wednesday, July 1st: According to Baaghi TV, Mr. Anupam Verma has a certificate which shows that he has flown for 360 hours. He says he got his license after sitting on the co-pilot’s seat for just 35 minutes.

Mr Verma, the son of a poor farmer, was paid by the Indian government to learn to fly a commercial jet    (59,600$). “What do I know if I’m flying and there’s an emergency?” Mr. Verma said in an interview. I didn’t know how or where to land. Not only will we kill the passengers, we may collapse in a village and kill more people.

When Mr. Verma, realized he could not get flight experience, he sued the Flying School for a refund. Concerns have been raised about the quality of Indian pilots over the past decade as the proliferation of airlines has led to the emergence of hundreds of new pilots.

In 2011, the Indian government reviewed the licenses of all the more than 4,000 airline pilots in the country as police suspected at least 18 people of forgery. The license review report was not made public.

According to a former pilot who has been flying in India for more than 40 years, on condition of anonymity, he said over logging has been a common practice in India since the 1960’s. With the rise of airlines, the number of fake licenses has increased.

He said only airlines could tell if a pilot had forged certificates because they lacked basic skills, but the carrier could not fire them because they had a license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The Indian government has made a concerted effort to seal the wrong documents and improve security in the industry. After the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded India’s safety rating last year over concerns of insufficient manpower, New Delhi hired more security inspectors and conducted a new audit of it’s airlines. The FAA restored India to its highest security level in April.

Satyavati, head of Indian Civil Aviation, told reporters on April 24 that India was “working hard” to ensure the safety of airline passengers and pilots.

One pilot said he had completed less than 120 of the 200 hours according to his certificate. He is preparing to apply to fly for IndiGo, the country’s largest carrier. Another pilot who said his certificates showed several hours of solo flights on Air India.

Mr. Verma said he had passed the entrance exam at the government-owned Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Orion Academy in Uttar Pradesh. He is finally looking forward to learning to fly this year.
