WASHINGTON (26th Nov. 2022): The United States (US) has decided to prohibit sales of Huawei equipment over concerns of a threat to national security.
According to international media reports, the Biden administration has banned approvals for new telecommunications equipment from Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE over concerns that they are “an unacceptable risk” to US national security.
On Friday, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said that it had adopted the rules which seek to bar the sale or import/export of equipment made by Chinese companies such as Dahua Technology (surveillance equipment maker), Hikvision Digital Technology (a video surveillance firm) and even (Hytera Communications Corp) a telecoms firm.
The ban is being hailed as Washington’s ‘crackdown’ against Chinese tech giants, as fears mount Beijing is spying on American citizens. In a statement, Jessica Rosenworcel, FCC chairwoman said that the rules are an “important part of our ongoing actions to protect the American people from national security threats”.
Responding to the ban, Hikvision said that its products are not a threat to US security. In a statement, they said that the FCC’s decision “will do nothing to protect US national security” but will only make it “harmful and more expensive” for small businesses and individual consumers across the US.
