IHC orders release of Pervaiz Elahi

The Islamabad High Court has ordered release of former Punjab chief minister and PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi who was arrested under 3MPO by the Islamabad police soon after his release by the Lahore High Court on Friday last.
The release order was issued by IHC judge Justice Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri on Tuesday.
The court directed Elahi to not give any kind of statement till the next hearing of the case.
The court also suspended the MPO order regarding arrest of Pervaiz Elahi and also issued notices to the concerned parties.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken a strong stance by issuing a show-cause notice for contempt of court to Islamabad Inspector General (IG) Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan. This move is in connection with the recent detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi under the 3-MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) last week.
The LHC has summoned the Islamabad police chief to appear before the court on September 8 to address the matter.
Parvez Elahi, a seasoned politician, was rearrested under the 3-MPO by the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police shortly after his release by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Subsequently, he was placed under house arrest in Adiala jail for a 15-day period. This action was taken by the ICT police despite a restraining order from the LHC against his potential arrest.
In response, the former Punjab chief minister approached the Lahore High Court, seeking contempt proceedings against the Islamabad IG.
In today’s hearing, the Punjab IG informed the court that the Islamabad police had taken Elahi into custody immediately after his release by NAB. He stated that a report regarding this matter had been submitted to the court’s registrar. Additionally, he acknowledged that no Punjab police officers had intervened to prevent the Islamabad police from arresting Elahi.
Simultaneously, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court related to its restraining order against the potential arrest of Parvez Elahi in an undisclosed case. In its plea, NAB asserted that the detention of the former Punjab chief minister was legal and based on his remand. They contended that the single bench of the LHC had not thoroughly examined the facts before ordering his release.
The Lahore High Court’s issuance of a contempt notice and the ongoing legal developments highlight the complex and politically charged nature of Parvez Elahi’s detention, which continues to be a subject of significant scrutiny and legal proceedings.
