India: 9 dead and 45 wounded as train derails in West Bengal #Baaghi

Jan 14, 2022: A railway official said rescue workers found four bodies overnight as they cleared 12 carriages of a derailed train in the Indian state of West Bengal, bringing the current total death toll to nine.

At least 45 people were injured in Thursday’s crash when coaches derailed and three overturned, Railway Ministry spokesman Rajiv Jain said.

Jain said Friday that rescue work has been completed and the track is being cleared to restore train services in the region. Photographs taken at the scene after the crash showed passengers trapped in broken metal and debris as rescue workers tried to pull them out. The train was traveling from Bikaner in Rajasthan to Guwahati in Assam when the accident happened in Jalpaiguri district.

All the injured are being treated at a hospital, senior police officer Debarshi Dutta said. The cause of the accident is being investigated, said Guneet Kaur, a senior railway official. He said the government would provide financial compensation to the families of the dead and all the injured.

Accidents are common on India’s large but old railway network.

Safety standards have been a constant concern in the state-run system, which operates 9,000 passenger trains and carries about 23 million passengers daily. In 2016, 127 people were killed when 14 bogies derailed in Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s worst train accidents.
