Oct 12, 2021: India’s largest port operator has said it will not handle cargo from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran from next month after seizing about three tonnes of heroin in the past month.
Adani Group’s Adani Ports said on Monday that its “commercial advisory” would apply to all terminals in which it operates, including third-party terminals.
They gave no reason but the decision came after about three tonnes of heroin was seized from two containers at the port of Mundra on India’s west coast last month. The shipment, valued at an estimated $2.65 billion, is the largest ever in the country, officials said.
Indian authorities also seized more than $20 million worth of heroin in a deep sea of drugs off the coast of Gujarat in September and arrested six Iranians. In response to the seizure, Adani Ports said it did not have the authority to inspect the millions of tonnes of cargo that pass through its terminals.
The port of Mundra, India’s largest economic and logistical gateway, handled 130 million tonnes of cargo last year and is also the country’s largest coal import terminal. Despite major US efforts to tackle the drug trade, most of the world’s opium and heroin comes from Afghanistan.
