June 22, 2021: India on Monday administered close to 8.6 million vaccine doses against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in a single day, which is the highest ever single-day number recorded in the world so far, said the Union health ministry in a statement.

The revised Universal COVID19 immunization policy was launched on June 1, with the Center providing 75% of the total vaccine produced in India to the states for free immunization to all adults. The Center then launched a global vaccination program against COVID19 on Monday to provide free vaccines to states for the 18-45 categories, which is expected to increase the number of daily vaccinations. Since the launch of the Covid 19 vaccine campaign in the country on January 16, 2021, about 300 million doses of the vaccine have been provided nationwide.

“This was a huge number for a single day, and even though this may not be possible to sustain daily in June because of the limited vaccine supplies, it looks likes about 5 million vaccine doses should be administered in a day,” said a senior government official aware of the developments, on condition of anonymity.

Dr NK Arora, chairman of the Working Group on COVID19 vaccines, said India should be able to deliver about 10 million shots a day by August, and vaccine supply is expected to improve in the coming weeks. The center has so far distributed about 300 million doses of vaccine in the states, of which about 270 million have been used up. According to the Ministry of Health, at least 20 million doses are still available in the pipeline, and about 3.3 million doses are in the pipeline that will be distributed to the states.

The government expects to receive 200-250 million doses a month by August as it produces vaccines, such as the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, which are in the process of boosting their vaccine production capacity. India’s vaccine drive was launched for health workers, and it was added to the frontline workers on February 2, and since then, every person over the age of 60 and over the age of 45 joined on March 1.

On April 1, it was expanded to include everyone over the age of 45. Then, in response to the demands of the states and the people, the campaign was opened to everyone over the age of 18, even though the states were told they would have it. For payment of vaccines for 18 and 45 year olds private hospitals were also allowed to provide vaccines at capped prices.
