India, Pakistan lock horns at T20 World Cup

Oct 24, 2021: On Sunday, the two sides will meet for the eighth time at a cricket World Cup. India have won all seven.

Pakistan and India kick off their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign in Dubai on Sunday, the first time since the 2019 World Cup League match in Manchester more than two years ago. The rain-soaked match at Old Trafford ended in India’s victory.

But on Sunday, a completely different atmosphere, from gloomy Manchester to dry and sunny Dubai, awaits both sides when they meet for the eighth time in T20 cricket. As expected, game tickets sold out within hours.

Both sides have won the tournament once. India was the winner in 2007 when it defeated Pakistan in the final. Pakistan did well in the 2009 tournament, winning its first Cricket World Cup since 1992, beating Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

Pakistan has never beaten India in any Cricket World Cup – the record in the 50-over format is 7-0 in India’s favor, while in the T20 form it is 5-0. Led by Virat Kohli, India also has an excellent T20 record against Pakistan, winning six of seven.

Looking at the record, India started as a favorite. Indian players also have the added benefit of playing in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), which was relocated to the United Arab Emirates due to the corona virus pandemic.

However, in the 10 years since Pakistan was unable to host international cricket, they have played all their “home” matches in the United Arab Emirates with excellent results and topped the Test rankings. Pakistan has won 21 of its 36 T20s in the UAE.

Pakistan entered the tournament after the series against New Zealand and England was canceled. The Kiwis withdrew from their tour of Pakistan just minutes before the opening match. Three days later, England canceled its tour.

India, meanwhile, have won five of their last 10 T20s and the IPL, India’s domestic T20 tournament, ended just days before the start of the opening round of the T20 World Cup.

According to Virat Kohli: “We never talked about these things, about our record and past performance. The important thing is how we prepare for this particular day and so on regardless of opposition. He said that Pakistan is a very strong team and has always been a strong side. You have to play your best cricket against them, because they have a lot of talent and players who can change the game.”

Babar Azam: “They are meant to break records. Truth be told, what has happened is beyond us. We want to use our ability and confidence on the day of the match so that we can get better results. The match between Pakistan and India is always full of intensity so we need to do well in all three areas of the game.”
