Indian-born Geeta Gopinath appointed IMF deputy managing director

WASHINGTON: Indian-origin Geeta Gopinath has been appointed Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Pakistan needs to be cautious. She will take the post after Geoffrey Ekamoto will step down.

Geeta Gopinath is currently serving as the IMF’s chief economist. She was due to return to teach at Harvard University in January 2022, but has now joined the IMF as Deputy Managing Director (First). Christina Georgieva, the IMF’s managing director, said she was glad Geeta had decided to stay at the IMF and was ready to take over as deputy managing director (first).

On the other hand, the IMF has taken full control of the state treasury in Pakistan , the government of Pakistan will no longer be able to borrow from the state treasury without proper process and documentation. Cannot print paper currency as was the case in the past.

The State Bank of Pakistan will now have to face Geeta Gopinath, a female Indian Deputy Managing Director, who is headed by Governor SBP Baqir Raza, who is a guarantor of the protection of Indian interests.
