In India, hundreds of thousands of health workers today launched a nationwide strike to protest against molestation and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata city last week.

The protestors including general public called for better working conditions and treatment for health workers.

Hospitals and clinics across the country turned away patients, except for emergency cases.

Doctors demanded legislation to protect healthcare workers from violence making any attack on on-duty medics an offence without possibility of bail.

In a statement, Indian Medical Association has condemned the lack of safe spaces for women.
