India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, on Monday met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing as the former emphasised the need for counter-terrorism measures to maintain regional peace and stability. The statement appeared to be an indirect message to China to pressurise its all-weather ally Pakistan to take action against terror outfits.

Both sides also reviewed recent progress in India-China ties and underscored the need to foster an overall development of diplomatic relations, including greater people-to-people engagement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

During the meeting, Wang noted that China-India ties have made some positive progress. He added that China and India should adhere to the direction of good neighbourliness and friendship, strive for a mutually beneficial and win-win prospect, demonstrate the historical wisdom of the two ancient civilisations, properly handle sensitive issues and maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas, Chinese envoy to India, Xu Feihong said.

“Only when the dragon and elephant dance together can there be a win-win outcome. China and India should properly handle sensitive issues and maintain peace and tranquillity in the border regions,” Xu tweeted in an update on the meeting.

Doval, meanwhile, said that India is willing to “strengthen collaboration with China in multilateral fields and fully supports China’s role as the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in hosting a successful summit”. “As two major Asian nations, India and China can make even greater contributions to the international community,” Xu tweeted.

“The NSA noted that he looked forward to meeting with Wang Yi in India at a mutually convenient date for the 24th round of the Special Representative (SR) talks,” the MEA said.

Doval is in China to attend a conclave of top national security officials of the member nations of the SCO, a key regional grouping focused on security-related matters.
