Indian police have detained around hundred workers and union leaders for striking against low wages at a Samsung Electronics plant in Southern India. According to the police, the arrests came after the workers were carrying out a march on Monday without seeking permission.

Workers have boycotted work for seven days demanding higher wages. The protest has disrupted the production that contributes roughly a third of Samsung’s annual India revenue of $12 billion.

Putting forward the details of the strike, a senior police official of Kancheepuram district, Sankar Ganesh, told the foreign media on telephone that around 100 workers were under “preventive arrest”, without explanation.

While another anonymous police officer said the detentions were made because workers didn’t seek permission to uphold protest march.

On the other hand, Samsung did not respond for any comment in this regard.
