India’s closure of Kartarpur Corridor reflective of persistent Sikh marginalization and repression

India’s unilateral decision to close the Kartarpur Corridor, the visa-free pilgrimage route for Sikh devotees to access Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, has once again highlighted the persistent marginalization and repression of Sikh religious and political rights.

According to Kashmir Media Service, while India cited “security concerns” amidst deteriorating bilateral relations with Pakistan, Sikh voices have challenged this justification, who view the move as a politically motivated disruption of religious rights. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj publicly urged the Indian government to reconsider its decision, emphasizing that political tensions should not obstruct religious freedom. “The Kartarpur Sahib is a sacred site for millions. Its access must remain unhindered, regardless of geopolitical frictions,” he stated.

While India closed its side of the corridor, Pakistan notably kept its gates open, framing the contrast as a reflection of its commitment to religious pluralism and minority rights.
