Indonesian Prison Fire kills 41 inmates, multiple injured #Baaghi

JAKARTA: Massive fire outbreak in Indonesian prison has resulted in the deaths of forty-one inmates meanwhile, eighty others have been injured. 

According to reports of Baaghi TV, a fire broke out in a prison early Wednesday, near Indonesia’s capital that led to multiple injured and over forty deaths. The fires which broke out, in Tangerang prison on the outskirts of Jakarta, were reportedly extinguished within two hours after soldiers and police were deployed around the prison to prevent the inmates from escaping.

Jakarta Police Chief Fadil Imran who was present at the scene confirmed the reports to local media. According to reports, the injured have been shifted to the hospital for treatment. 

“The situation is now under control,” stated Chief Fadil Imran, adding that eight of the hospitalized have sustained severe burns.

According to reports, an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire outbreak, however, based on preliminary investigation, officials have pointed out a short circuit issue in one of the prison blocks. 

The prison which has a capacity to maintain approximately 1,225 prisoners allegedly housed more than 2,000 according to Rika Aprianti, spokesperson for the Corrections Department at the Justice Ministry. 

 

The fire which started in Block C of Tangerang prison was “stuffed full” with 122 convicts. On the other hand, the 15 on-duty guards are reportedly unhurt.
