On Monday, a top US official informed that Iran plans to provide drones and combat weapon capabilities to Russia against Ukraine.
According to the White House national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, the United States’ information suggests that after losses in Ukraine, the Russian military is having problems with its weaponry maintenance.
Sullivan said that Iran plans to send Russia “up to several hundred UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), including weapons-capable UAVs, on an expedited timeline.”
He added that the initial training sessions for these UAVs will commence in early July. However, there is no confirmation on whether these drones have been received in Russia yet. He also mentioned that these Iranian drones have been used against Saudi Arabia in Yemen by the Houthi rebels.
Both sides have used drones to a large extent from targeting with small bombs and firing missiles from a distance to reconnaissance for, both, artillery forces and ground troops.
Ukraine has had great support from the United States and allies with smaller drones and it has made use of Turkish-made Bayraktar armed combat UAVs.
Sullivan also said, “From our perspective, we will continue to do our part to help sustain the effective defence of Ukraine and to help the Ukrainians show that the Russian effort to try to wipe Ukraine off the map cannot succeed.”
