Recent hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah represent a notable escalation in the ongoing conflict. On Sunday morning, the Israeli military launched a substantial air campaign, deploying approximately 100 fighter jets to conduct pre-emptive strikes on Hezbollah targets throughout southern Lebanon.

This assault, if the reported figures are accurate, marks the most extensive Israeli operation in Lebanon since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. These strikes occurred at around 04:30 local time (01:30 GMT), with Israel claiming that Hezbollah had been planning a major attack just 30 minutes later, targeting Tel Aviv, Israel’s largest city, according to a New York Times report citing an unnamed Israeli intelligence official.

In response, Hezbollah launched over 300 rockets and missiles aimed at military sites in northern Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the region. This exchange of fire has heightened fears of a potential all-out war. Hezbollah has stated that these attacks are just the first phase of its retaliation for the assassination of senior commander Fouad Shukr in Beirut on July 30, which is widely attributed to Israel. The situation was further inflamed by the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran the following day, also believed to be the work of Israel.

Diplomatic efforts have been underway for weeks to prevent the Gaza conflict from expanding into a broader regional war, but so far, these initiatives have failed to produce a ceasefire or hostage release deal. Israel’s military has declared its readiness to engage in a two-front war against both Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with the latter posing a more significant challenge due to its estimated arsenal of 150,000 rockets and well-trained fighters, many of whom have combat experience from the Syrian conflict.

How it will pan out, time will tell!
