Israeli air attack kills 2 Syrian civilians; 7 wounded
Nov 24, 2021: Israeli airstrikes on central Syria have killed two civilians and wounded seven others, Syrian state media reported on Wednesday.
The Syrian air defense tried to stop the attack on the city of Homs. “Israeli airstrikes have targeted parts of the central region, and air defenses are responding,” the state-run SANA news agency reported.
Sana further reported that two civilians were killed while another sustained serious injury, adding six Syrian soldiers were also injured in the attack.
An unnamed military official was quoted as saying the warplanes fired missiles at 1:26am local time while flying over the airspace of neighbouring Lebanon.
Israel, which has carried out hundreds of attacks on Syria over the years, did not immediately comment on the report.
Israel seldom acknowledges or discusses such actions. The latest attack comes amid a surge in alleged Israeli attacks on Syria in recent weeks. Last week, Syria said Israel had attacked south of the capital, Damascus. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a mosque in the occupied Golan Heights, hitting an empty facility and causing no casualties.
Earlier this month, two Syrian soldiers were wounded in an Israeli airstrike near the eastern countryside of Homs and near the coastal city of Tartous.
Israel has acknowledged that it has eliminated Iranian allied militia bases, such as the Lebanese Hezbollah group whose fighters are stationed in Syria. They says they are attacking a consignment of weapons that are believed to belong to an armed group.
Hezbollah has been fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in a 10-year civil war. Israel further says Iran’s presence on its northern border is a red line, justifying its air strikes on installations and weapons inside Syria.
