TEHRAN: On Saturday, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) targeted Iran’s air defense systems gaining ‘more freedom’ to operate in its skies
Speaking with a representative of the AFP, Israeli military spokesperson R Adm Daniel Hagari said: “Now, the state of Israel has wider freedom of action in the air over Iran as well”. US website Axios reported that Israel sent a message to Iran ahead of its airstrikes, on Friday, cautioning them against retaliating. The website reported that Israel’s message was an attempt to limit the exchange of attacks between the two countries and prevent a possible wider escalation in the region. The report further stated that the message was conveyed to Iranian authorities via third parties.

Two other sources hinted that Israel had cautioned Iran against retaliating and stressed that if the later did choose to retaliate, Israel would respond with a “more significant attack”, which was further confirmed by IDF representative R Adm Daniel Hagari to reporters.
Likewise, the US has urged Iran to stop attacking Israel in order to “break the cycle of violence”, as per a report by The Guardian, after Israel had targeted its air defense systems. Sean Savett, US National Security Council spokesperson, said on Saturday that the US has urged “Iran to cease its attacks on Israel so that this cycle of fighting can end without further escalation”. Savett stressed that the US is aiming to “accelerate diplomacy and de-escalate tensions” in the region.
On the one hand, Saudi Arabia (KSA) has condemned the Israeli airstrikes terming it a “violation of it[Iran]’s sovereignty” and international laws. In a similar report by Reuters, Saudi authorities have urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and requested the international community to take appropriate actions toward ending conflict in Middle East. On the other hand, UK’s Premier Keir Starmer in a press conference, has urged Iran against responding to the attack stating that the Middle East should “avoid further regional escalation”.

Meanwhile, the IRNA, Iran’s official news agency reported that the country’s air defense had successfully “intercepted and countered” the airstrikes targeting its military centers, adding that the damage caused was “limited“. Quoting the Iranian Air Defnce command’s pubic relations office, the IRNA urged people to “remain calm, maintain solidarity and rely only on news from state media”. It further cautioned the public to “ignore enemy media rumors”, respectively.
According to reports, at least seven explosions were reported near Tehran, Karaj and Mashhad around 2:30 am after which Iran temporarily suspended all flights but resumed them around 9 am, on Saturday.
