Istanbul airport suspends flight operations because of snow
Jan 24, 2022: Istanbul Airport, Europe’s busiest airport last year, suspended all flights to Turkey’s largest city on Monday due to a severe blizzard.
The airport opened in 2019, replacing the old Ataturk Airport as the new hub for Turkish Airlines. It provides an important link to Africa and the Middle East, as well as to Europe and Asia. The airport said in a statement that “due to the adverse conditions, all flights have been temporarily suspended due to air safety.”
Flights will be suspended until at least 6 p.m. (1500 GMT), officials said. Turkish media say the airport has been closed for the first time since its opening due to bad weather.
Located on the Black Sea coast about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of central Istanbul, the air hub serviced more than 37 million passengers last year, according to the transportation ministry.
Istanbul was hit by its first snowstorm of the winter over the weekend.
