Dec 10, 2021: Japanese researchers have developed masks that use ostrich antibodies to detect Covid 19 by glowing under ultraviolet light.

The teams of researchers said in a press release that the discovery of Yasuhiro Tsukamoto and his team at Kyoto Prefectural University in western Japan could provide a low-cost test for the virus at home. Scientists began by making a mask filter coated with ostrich antibodies that targets the novel coronavirus, based on previous research showing that birds have a strong resistance to disease.

In a small study, test subjects wore masks, and eight hours later, the filters were removed and sprayed with a chemical that would glow in ultraviolet light if the virus was present. Filters worn by people infected with CoVID-19 shine around the nose and mouth.

The team hopes to further develop the mask so that if the virus is detected, it will glow automatically without special lighting. Tsukamoto, a veterinary professor and president of the university, has studied ostriches for many years, looking for ways to improve their immunity to fight bird flu, allergies and other diseases.

Tsukamoto told the Kyodo News Agency that he discovered this property of the ostrich antibodies reaction to Covid19 accidentally when he wore a special mask and shone on checking it. The diagnosis was confirmed after standard tests.
