Jeep carrying voters falls into a nullah in AJK

As Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) votes in its first local government election in 31 years, a jeep carrying voters lost control and fell into a nullah in Neelam Valley, consequently killing six women and injuring eight others.

Talking to Dawn.com, District Disaster Management Officer Akhtar Ayoub revealed that the fatal accident occurred in the Chhari area of Dudhnial at around 12:30pm in the afternoon when the jeep fell into a 300 foot-deep dry nullah.

Akhtar Ayoub said that the passengers were locals of the Thanda Pani village situated beside the Neelum River and had come to vote in a nearby polling station.

The district disaster management officer claimed that the vehicle was carrying passengers which far outnumbered its capacity, adding that those who were injured in the incident have been shifted to a health unit in Dudhnial.

He added that following the incident, the voting process at the nearby polling station was briefly halted. However, it later resumed when authorities arrived to take care of the injured and those who had died in the incident.
