Jesus statue smashed by Hindu extremists in India
Amid growing intolerance against India’s religious minorities, Hindu extremists targetted several Christmas events and smashed multiple Jesus (PBUH) statues.
According to reports, celebrations were disrupted in parts of India by Hindutva groups that targetted the Christian community in a spate of attacks including the smashing of Jesus (PBUH) statues, and effigies of Santa Claus over Christmas.

British Daily newspaper The Guardian, reported that members of the ring-wing groups burned effigies of Santa Claus in Agra, Uttar Pradesh outside missionary schools and “accused Christian missionaries of using Christmas celebrations to lure people in”. Ajju Chauhan, regional general-secretary of Bajrang Dal, a right-wing extremist group claimed the Christian community uses Santa Claus to lure children in and attract them towards Christianity.
Meanwhile, protestors entered a Presbyterian Church in Assam and disrupted the religious proceedings. According to reports, one of the protestors claimed, that they are against the participation of Hindu boys and girls in Christian festivities. The protestors added, “it hurts our sentiments”. As per the latest updates, both men involved in the Assam disruption have been taken into custody.

An evening celebration was stopped in Haryana when a Hindutva group came in shouting slogans of Hindu nationalism. According to reports, this group claimed the Christians were using their festivities as a means to “religious conversion” and that the Hindu children were being “brainwashed” into denouncing Hinduism.
In another Haryana incident, a group of Hindu extremists tore down and vandalized a statue of Jesus (PBUH).
A similar incident occurred in an Uttar Pradesh Ashram where the vigilante group shouted slogans of “missionary muradabad”. According to reports, Father Anand, a member of the Matridham Ashram informed local media that the “protestors were indicative of the increased attacks”. Father Anand said that their actions mirrored the intolerance faced by the Indian Christian community. He added that Sunday is a “day of terror and trauma” for the religious minority.

Such attacks are an example of the rising discrimination and hatred against religious minorities, especially Muslims and Christians, across India. Since coming into power in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been known for fueling the flames of intolerance. According to a report by Persecution Relief, crimes of this nature have risen by 60% between 2106 to 2019.
Meanwhile, another report released in October showed approximately 300 documented cases of religious intolerance.
