Biden talks with Japan to focus on security in Asia-Pacific and Russia threats to Ukraine

US President, Joe Biden stated on Thursday that the US will standby Taiwan for its defense if China attacks it, a stance that seems to oppose America’s stated policy of “strategic ambiguity.”

When Joe Biden was asked about what he would do in event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan, specifically he was asked whether he would provide aid to Taiwan or not. To this he replied with the comment: “Yes, we have a commitment to do that,”
Biden has made similar standpoints before, only to have the White House say well-established US policy has not changed toward the island. The US provides Taiwan with defensive weapons and artillery, but has remained intentionally enigmatic on whether it would interfere militarily on Taiwanese site in the event of a Chinese attack.
According to the “One China” Policy, the US acknowledges China’s hold over Taiwan. In recent weeks, The Chinese capital has sent many warplanes near into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), and Chinese President, Xi Jinping has stated that “reunification” between China and Taiwan was un-avoidable.
A White House official tried to clarify Biden’s comments on Taiwan before the town hall, saying that the President was “not announcing any change in our policy and there is no change in our policy” in his remarks about China and Taiwan.
