Kakar's Visit to LUMS: A Critical Assessment | Baaghi TV

Former Inspector General of Police Punjab and Ex-Home Minister Punjab, Shaukat Javed, expressed his disappointment on October 31st, 2023, regarding the quality of questions posed by students during a recent visit by a prominent guest, Kakar, to Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).

Javed’s tweet criticized the students’ choice of questions as trivial and not up to the expected standard for LUMS students. He pointed out the absence of inquiries about constitutional crises, the legitimacy of a caretaker setup beyond 90 days, the treatment of political workers, and the denial of justice to missing persons. However, Javed did acknowledge that the Prime Minister responded well to the questions that were asked.

It is important to address the issues raised by Shaukat Javed regarding the nature of the questions posed by LUMS students. While he raises valid points, it is essential to consider a broader perspective on such visits and the value they bring.

First, there is a concern that time during the event was wasted on point-scoring. In the video, we can observe a question regarding why Kakar chose to visit LUMS when the country faced pressing issues. It’s worth noting that it is not unusual for Presidents or Prime Ministers to visit universities and colleges, not only in their own country but also abroad. For instance, Mr. Yushchenko, the third President of Ukraine, and his wife, Katherine, visited The University of Manchester to discuss the war in Ukraine. The applause that followed the question by the LUMS student, unfortunately, reveals a lack of basic awareness about how such exchanges facilitate interaction with some of the best minds and promote the exchange of ideas. The incident of the student questioning Kakar’s visit raises concerns about the lack of awareness and wasted time during the event. Such moments could have been better utilized by asking questions of greater significance.

To put this into context, it’s worth recalling some historical examples. In 2010, Barack Obama was 45 minutes late at Howard University, where he had a meeting with the Secretary of Defense. George W. Bush was 20 minutes late at Princeton University in 2001, as he was meeting the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Similarly, Tony Blair was 30 minutes late at the Cambridge Union in 2002 because he was in talks with the Prime Minister of France. Margaret Thatcher was 45 minutes late at the Oxford Union in 1987 due to traffic.

In conclusion, Omar R. Qureshi, a prominent media figure, highlighted the issue on October 31st, 2023, when he tweeted, “I have been a student at one of the world’s top universities. I understood that heads of government could sometimes be late, and I always had the choice to skip the event. No one asks the guest why they are late and proceeds to insult them, while others clap. This behavior is not just insulting but counterproductive.”
