Karachi: At least 15 people have been killed in a fire at a factory in Mehran Town, Korangi District, Karachi.

According to reports, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi Shah Jahan Khan stated that 15 bodies have been exhumed so far. About 25 people were trapped in the building and all were feared dead, he said.

Residents said the factory manufactured suitcases and other equipment, and the chemicals required for them were stored in drums. Furthermore, according to rescue sources, there was no emergency exit.

Police surgeon Dr. Samia Syed has stated that so far 13 bodies have been brought to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center.

A Karachi police spokesman said that one of Edhi’s rescue volunteers fell and was injured during the firefighting operation and was shifted to Jinnah Hospital.

On the other hand, while talking to the media, Administrator Karachi Murtaza Wahab said that 10 people have died due to suffocation.

He said the fire was reported at 10:09 a.m. and the crew left at 10:10 a.m. All measures were taken but the problem arose because there was no emergency exit, he said.

Murtaza Wahab further said that the fire has been extinguished and now the cooling process is underway. According to him, 21 people were working on the first floor, 10 of which are confirmed dead.

He said that police and fire brigade personnel are investigating the matter and a report would be shared with the media after its completion.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and has demanded a report from Commissioner Karachi and the Labor Department, asking how the incident took place. what were the security measures, and how so many casualties occurred.

He also directed the concerned authorities to extend full support to the families of the victims and treat the injured.

It may be recalled that on February 10, a fire broke out in a yarn factory in Baldia Town at around 11 pm which engulfed the three-storey building in a matter of seconds. Three people were burnt to death in the blaze, and the building was badly damaged.

The worst factory fire in Karachi occurred in September 2012, in which more than 250 workers were killed in a fire at the Ali Enterprise factory in Ludhiana.
