Aug 11, 2021: The Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) service in Karachi will be operational by October this year, according to Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Asad Umar.

Asad Umar said in a tweet that Prime Minister Imran Khan reviewed the progress of five federal projects in the Karachi Transformation Plan and the Green Line BRT would start from October this year.

Asad Umar said that storm water drainage, sewerage and road projects would be completed during the current financial year. In addition, construction of K-IV Water Project, Modern Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) and Freight Corridor projects will also start during the current financial year.

During his visit to Karachi yesterday, Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that early completion of federal government projects in Karachi and early start of newly announced works are among the top priorities of the government.

He also directed all the concerned officials to complete all the projects within their time frame as they are keen to inaugurate them as soon as possible for the welfare of the people of the city. The Prime Minister was presiding over a meeting to review the progress of ongoing development projects under the Karachi Transformation Plan.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Railway Minister Azam Swati, Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Zaidi, Minister for Defense Production Zubeida Jalal and senior government officials.

The Prime Minister was briefed on the rehabilitation of three major canals in Karachi, including Mahmoodabad, Gujjar and Orangi, Malir and Lyari rivers, construction of road canals, laying of sewerage system and relocation of utilities. The Minister of Media Office said.

The Prime Minister was informed that all other civil works would be completed by June 2022. He was also briefed about the latest update of Green Line and Orange Line BRT projects. The Green Line will be operational by October this year, as 80 buses will arrive at the port of Karachi from China by mid-September 2021.

Similarly, at the request of the Sindh government, SIDCL (Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited) was also purchasing 20 buses for the Orange Line, which were expected to reach Karachi by December 2021.

The Chairman Water and Power Development Authority briefed the Prime Minister on the K-IV project for water supply to the city.

He said the city is currently extracting 1,200 cusecs (665MGD), including 100MGD from Hub Dam. To alleviate the suffering of the citizens of Karachi, the K-IV project was conceived / implemented by the Government of Sindh and was jointly funded by the Government of Sindh and the Federal Government.

The Prime Minister was informed that the Joint Cross Section Survey has been completed up to 85 km and the united consultants and international staff of ILF have been mobilized. The final design was expected to be completed by October 2021. Civil works will begin by February 2022. The project is expected to be completed by October 2023.

The Prime Minister directed WAPDA to ensure the availability of clean and sufficient water for Karachi as soon as possible while adopting all technically viable and economically viable methods.

Planning Minister Asad Omar said that the Prime Minister’s concern and focus at the moment is on Karachi as the metropolitan city of Pakistan has a unique significance as the economic center and financial capital.
