Karachi police prepare security plan for West Indies tour

Dec 10, 2021: According to a report in The News, Karachi police have prepared a comprehensive security plan ahead of the West India-Pakistan home series starting December 13.

The West Indies cricket team arrived in Karachi on Thursday, December 9. They will play three T20Is and as many ODIs at the National Stadium in Karachi before the guests leave on December 23. A meeting chaired by Additional Inspector General Imran Yaqub Minhas was held at Sindh Boys Scouts Auditorium on Thursday to review the security situation and prepare for it in advance.

DIG Security and Emergency Services Division Maqsood Ahmed briefed about the strict security measures taken for the visit. A total of 46 DSPs including 13 senior officers of Karachi Police, 315 NGOs, 3822 constables, and head constables, 50 women police personnel, 500 personnel of Rapid Response Force and 889 commandos of Special Security Unit will perform security duties.

The resources from Karachi Traffic Police will be deployed during the matches at the National Stadium in the routes, practice grounds, parking areas, hotels and other areas.

Special Branch personnel in plain clothes will be deployed for the security of the teams at the National Stadium and hotels in Karachi. A special weapons and tactics team will be on standby to deal with emergencies.

In a meeting earlier this year, DIG Security Maqsood Ahmed Memon said sharpshooters would be placed at sensitive spots during the West Indies tour to Pakistan, as the authorities finalised the security plan ahead of the series. He had then said that security division personnel including commandos of special security unit would be deployed to maintain law and order.

The West Indies cricket team arrived in Karachi on Thursday to play three T20s and as many ODIs against Pakistan.

West Indian cricketers and team management officials arrived in Karachi from Dubai, where samples for the Covid 19 test were taken. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sources said that the cricketers will remain in quarantine at the hotel till their corona test is negative.

Last week the National Command and Control Center (NCOC) had reportedly allowed a full-fledged crowd to watch the match between Pakistan and the West Indies at the National Stadium in Karachi.

In a bid to help cricket fans from various walks of life watch their superstars in action, the Pakistan Cricket Board has set the ticket prices for the T20I matches from as low as PKR250 till PKR2,000.

Seats in General Enclosures (Intikhab Alam, Iqbal Qasim, Mohammad Brothers, Nasimul Ghani and Wasim Bari) are priced at PKR250; in First-class Enclosures (Asif Iqbal, Majid Khan, Quaid, Waqar Hasan and Zaheer Abbas) are for PKR500; in Premium Enclosures (Imran Khan and Wasim Akram) are for PKR1,000; and in VIP Enclosures (Fazal Mahmood, Hanif Mohammad and Javed Miandad) are for PKR2,000.
