Mar 13, 2022: Australia’s opener Usman Khawaja completed his third 150-plus score to take Australia 332-4 by lunch on the second day of the second Test against Pakistan in Karachi on Sunday.
When the players left for lunch, Khawaja of Pakistani origin was 155 not out and Travis Head scored 14 as Australia added 81 after resuming on the pitch of the slow-moving National Stadium at 251-3. Khawaja, along with night watchman Nathan Lyon, added 54 runs for the fourth wicket to disappoint the Pakistani bowlers who were looking for early wickets to stop Australia’s progress.
A chance to dismiss Lyon was missed by all-rounder Faheem Ashraf who failed to hold on to a return catch to his left with Lyon at 31 who later capitalised on the reprieve with a boundary but Ashraf had the last laugh three overs later, with a delivery that crashed into the stumps after touching the batter’s pad.
He was earlier dropped on nought by Imam-ul-Haq off pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi on Saturday, and ended up hitting five boundaries during his stubborn knock of 38.
Usman Khawaja was meanwhile remained unflustered and pushed Hasan Ali for a single to complete his 150. By lunch on day 2 he had batted for 406 minutes, hitting 15 fours and one six.
In the Pakistani side, Feheem Ashraf was Pakistan’s best bowler with figures of 2-47, while Hasan Ali had 1-45.
Australia, touring Pakistan for the first time in 24 years, will play three Tests, three one-day internationals and a single Twenty20 international on the tour.
