Karachi's Green Line bus project becomes fully operational

Jan 10, 2022: Karachi’s Green Line Bus Rapid Transit Service (BRTS) became fully operational on Monday, almost six years after work commenced on the project.

This was announced by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Measures Asad Omar in a tweet on Monday. “Just as it was announced a month ago when Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the Green Line operation and its pilot operations began, full commercial operations of the Green Line have begun.”

“22 stations, 80 buses, 7am to 10pm, 13 hours a day,” he tweeted. On December 25, all 80 buses of his fleet started their operation between Surjani Town and Namaish Chowrangi.

Now, the Green Line bus service has been made fully operational and its duration will be from 7am to 10 pm.

The bus service will start from KESC Power House Chowrangi in Surjani Town and will end at Municipal Park after passing through Nagan Chowrangi, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad and Gurmunder. It has 25 stations on its route.

The fare for one trip will be between Rs. 15 to 55. The Green Line BRT will carry around 300,000 passengers daily. With over 23km of dedicated tracks, the Bus Service Project offers special services for the disabled. Hybrid vehicles will run on batteries and diesel.

In December, Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the project in Karachi, thanking Sindh Infrastructure Development Company Limited (SIDCL) and Karachi MPs for taking the project forward. He termed Karachi as the engine of Pakistan’s development and said that if Karachi develops then Pakistan will develop.

The Prime Minister said that the city could not be transformed into a modern city till the administrative shortcomings were rectified. He said that no modern city can function without modern transport.
