Sikhs associated with Khalistan movement organised a powerful demonstration in the Canadian city of Calgary to express their discontent with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at the two-day Group of Seven (G7) summit.
The protest was led by Khalistan supporter Manjinder Singh. It started from the Dashmesh Gurudwara in Calgary, where anti-Modi slogans were raised. Protesters including children burnt an effigy of Modi. The Indian prime minister was also displayed in a jail-like cage during the roadshow in Calgary, triggering security concerns, according to media reports.
Speaking to the local media, the protest organisers called Modi an “enemy of Canada.” They said they aimed to “end Modi’s politics” and “make Canada secure.”
The Sikh protesters vowed that their demonstrations would continue as long as Modi stayed in Canada. Demonstrators also raised slogans in support of Khalistan.
India received the G7 Summit invitation just days before the event, indicating India’s strained ties with Canada after New Delhi was blamed for killing of Sikh leader on the Canadian soil.
