PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Assembly has set a weight limit for children’s school bags, and strict action will be taken against violating school principles.

The KPK Assembly has approved the School Bags Limitation of Weight Bill 2020, under which children’s school bags will be weighed according to their class.

Sources said that under the Act, the weight of bags has been determined separately for each class. The weight of the bag will be 2.4 kg for first graders and 2.6 kg for second graders.

In addition, according to the enacted bill, the weight of the bag will be 3 kg for the third grade while the weight of the bag will be up to 7 kg for the high school students.

The bill further said that overweight school bags would lead to severe disciplinary action against the principles of government schools across the province and a fine of up to Rs 200,000 would be imposed on private educational institutions.

It should be noted that the bill passed in the KPK Assembly was opposed by Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam Fazl (JUI-F) member Mahmood Bhatni.
