Jakarta, May 11, 2021: Torrential rains in Indonesia resulted in landslides on Monday, which caused an accident at a local gold mine, killing 7 people and leaving one miner missing.
The accident happened after the mine, located in South Solok regency, West Sumatra, was inundated with mud mixed with stones and debris. The head of the local emergency department, Fikri said rescue operations had managed to save 9 people but 7 were killed and 1 remained missing for whom the search is still on. Fikri added that the operation hit a few snags are the beginning because of the difficult terrain but in the end, all survivors were transported safely to the hospital.
Just two weeks ago, another landslide on the island archipelago nation hit the Chinese-backed Batang Toru hydro power project in North Sumatra, resulting in the death of 10 people and left three people missing whose whereabouts remain unknown after the operation was called off.
The rainy season often proves to be deadly for the country with landslides and flash floods common across the nation. Last month alone, the Tropical Cyclone Seroja ravaged parts of the far-eastern islands and neighbor Timor Leste after turning small communities into wastelands of mud and uprooting trees.
According to estimates from Indonesia’s disaster agency, 125 million people or half of its population live at risk of landslides which can be attributed to deforestation and poor contingency planning.
