Large explosion reported near Iran’s nuclear sites

Dec 4, 2021: Iranian news agencies on Saturday reported a large explosion in the sky above the town of Natanz, which houses nuclear sites, but that there was no official explanation of the incident.

Iranian media reported an explosion which was heard on Saturday night near Natanz was caused by an air defense drill, after local residents reported hearing a blast and seeing a bright light in the sky.

“Local sources have reported hearing a large explosion in the Natanz sky. No official source has yet confirmed or denied the report,” some websites, including Fararunews, quoted the Daneshju (Student) News Agency as reporting.

The semi-official Fars news agency quoted its reporter in nearby Badroud as saying a short-lasting blast was heard which was accompanied by an intense light in the sky.

“No exact details are available about this,” Fars quoted the local governor of Badrud as saying.

Initial reports indicated that Iranian air defense systems had been activated. According to the Iranian Fars News Agency, a bright light was seen in the sky as the explosion was heard.
Fars later reported that the explosion was caused by an air defense missile that had been fired as part of a drill to test a quick response a possible attack.
