LHC announces verdict in Ali Tareen foreign assets case

October 20, 2021: The Lahore High Court (LHC) gave the good news to Ali Tareen, son of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Khan Tareen.

According to details, the LHC has suspended the notices sent by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to Jahangir Tareen’s son Ali Tareen. Moreover, the LHC heard a petition filed by the FBR against Ali Tareen for sending notices for non-disclosure of foreign assets.

The Secretary Revenue Division and the Chairman FBR were made parties in the petition. The petition states that the FBR has sent a notice of reasons on the ground of malice. Suspending past notices, issuing notices to Secretary Revenue Division, Chairman FBR, and others seeking reply.

The petition filed by Ali Tareen in the Lahore High Court said that the FBR had sent an unwarranted notice for non-disclosure of assets of PKR 33,638,602. Petitions are already pending in the Lahore High Court on the issue of non-disclosure of assets and the court has also issued a restraining order.

The petition states that they have declared all foreign assets in their 2018 statements. Despite this, the FBR has again sent them a notice of reasons without fulfilling all the legal requirements under the Income Tax Ordinance, which is a violation of constitutional and legal rules.

The petition also contends that the FBR has sent a show-cause notice on malicious grounds. The FBR should also be prevented from taking disciplinary action against the petitioner till the final decision of the petition.
